Center Stage and Robin Hood - New Bronze Miniatures from Zadar Studios

New Bronze Miniatures by Randall Zadar

I have two new miniature bronze figurines that I am working on in the studio. Here they are pictured together.

Randall Zadar

Center Stage

The first one is called "Center Stage" and it is a five piece set featuring three ballet dancers, a custom stage and a flower basket. All the pieces are designed to fit into the stage as shown below with this front and back view.

You can see the flower basket and how it fits into the stage.

This picture gives you a sense of scale photographed next to my hand. The height of the piece is: 1 - 1/8" or 28 mm.

Another picture on my watch to show scale and the delicate sculpting.

This pictures shows the pieces separate and assembled.

Here is another picture of the separate pieces. The bases on each dancer are key shaped so they only fit one way into the stage. The flower basket is also shaped to fit. You can imagine the great difficulty in sculpting, molding, and casting these dancers. When sculpting, the wax masters would break often from the slightest touch of the sculpting blade.

Randall Zadar

In order to allow better handling of the complete bronze sculpture, I will assemble and paint 50 complete sets of "Center Stage." After the edition is finished, I will make available the individual pieces for collectors who do not collect the complete set. The pieces will be available except for the stage. The only way to get the stage is to buy the complete, numbered set. This will make the 50 sets more valuable in the future.

Here is a picture of the complete set and individual dancers. The complete sculpture or the separate pieces would look great to decorate a miniature setting or in your display case.

The assembled sets will be a limited edition of 50 pieces. Available the end of April. The individual pieces will be available in about three months. The separate pieces will not be numbered, only the assembled sets.

Robin Hood

This piece I started a couple of years ago, put it down and then recently decided to finish it. I stopped working on it years ago because I was concerned the piece would not cast. When you have a piece like this that has very fine areas like the arrows, it is always difficult to mold and cast.

I designed the entire piece around the molding and casting challenge. I made many adjustments to the sculpture that allowed it to cast successfully.

These pictures show scale. The piece stands at 7/8 inch tall.

Here is a back view. Notice the quiver and sword. I was completely amazed that this piece was successfully molded, and cast as one piece. A testament to the Lost Wax Casting Process and the incredible detail that can be achieved.

Here is a picture of the rough wax master started two years ago as noted in an earlier blog entry. You can see how much the piece was refined and changed.

Meissen Miniature - Miniature Porcelain Reproduction after Kandler by Randall Zadar

Meissen Miniature by Randall Zadar

For years, I have been thinking about reproducing a Meissen piece in miniature, just waiting for the right time. Two good collector friends, made a trip to Meissen Germany many years ago and toured the Meissen Porcelain Factory. They brought me back a very special book on the porcelain figurines by Johann Joachim Kandler, probably the best porcelain modeler of all time. Many of the pieces in the book interested me, but one always stood out.

Meissen Indian Lovers Kandler

The book was in German, but I was able to translate the description to English:

"The Indian Love Couple from 1745, playing a lute and drinking coffee."

A later catalog of 1748, lists the title as "Chinese Lovers" but I decided to keep the original title of 1745 and probably the way Kandler wanted it titled. I changed it to simply, "Indian Lovers" and I believe it keeps the original spirit of the piece.

Here is the miniature bronze figurine, 21mm or about 3/4" tall.

The piece was a challenge to sculpt and then to mold. The piece had to be sculpted and molded in three components. Here is a wax pattern.

Then the wax was carefully assembled before casting.

Randall Zadar Meissen Miniature Lost Wax Casting

This was time consuming assembling all the pieces before casting. However, the bronze casting was one solid piece.

The finished piece really came out beautiful.
